porodnice ne ležite, babice vstanite! / laboring women, do not lie down, midwives, stand up

Porodna pomoč naj bo varna in hkrati ženskam, otrokom in družini prijazna: sočutna, podporna in strokovno utemeljena.

Kaj bodo dosegli:

Ozaveščevalna kampanja »Porodnice ne ležite, babice vstanite!« zajema dve ciljni skupini: ženske v rodni dobi in babice.

  • Njihov cilj je doseči večjo ozaveščenost žensk v rodni dobi o njihovih pravicah v porodni oskrbi in spremembe v praksi: zmanjšati neprimerno skrb in nasilje v porodnišnicah in povečati uresničevanja pravic porodnic.
  • Ženske v rodni dobi bodo ozaveščali o pravicah z rednimi objavami in komunikacijo na družbenih omrežjih, spletnih straneh, v FB skupinah.
Zbirali bodo kršitve, jih analizirali, nadgradili dosedanje podatke in jih takoj uporabili v našem nadaljnjem delu v tem projektu.

In Slovenia, around 17,500 women look forward to giving birth every year. Unfortunately, many women in maternity hospitals experience violations of their human and patient rights, inappropriate birthing practices, and violence. This problem is widespread worldwide, confirmed by studies in Slovenia as well. These are various unacceptable practices, such as a healthcare professional roughly and painfully examining a woman vaginally despite her explicit “no.” Or they may sew a perineal tear “live,” even before pain relief medication takes effect. Women find it difficult to speak about these unacceptable experiences they have undergone. The consequences include trauma, difficulty in caring for the newborn, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and some even decide not to have more children despite their desire.

Naravni začetki is a long-standing advocate for women’s rights during childbirth in Slovenia. It is in society’s interest to establish a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and inappropriate practices wherever women give birth. The project is a continuation of the project “Pravica je (tudi) ženskega spola!” (The Right is (also) of Women’s Gender!). They will continue to raise awareness and educate in various ways about the rights of childbirth women and the midwives as key supporters during one of the most important life transitions. Childbirth care should be safe and at the same time woman-, child-, and family-friendly: compassionate, supportive, and evidence-based. Women will recover faster after childbirth, be more capable of focusing on motherhood and other aspects of their lives. Mothers should look back on their childbirth with a smile.

In short: A woman giving birth also has her rights, and these should help her realize them.

What will they achieve:

  • The awareness campaign “Porodnice ne ležite, babice vstanite!” (Childbirth Women, Do Not Lie Down, Midwives, Stand Up!) targets two main groups: women of childbearing age and midwives.
  • Their goal is to achieve greater awareness among women of childbearing age about their rights in childbirth care and changes in practice: reducing inappropriate care and violence in maternity hospitals and increasing the realization of women’s rights during childbirth.
  • They will raise awareness among women of childbearing age through regular posts and communication on social media, websites, and FB groups. For in-depth information, they will direct them to their portal Pravice porodnice (Women’s Rights in Childbirth) www.praviceporodnice.org. This will ensure they are well informed and more empowered for childbirth.
  • Women after childbirth with a negative experience will be asked to share their testimonies. They will collect instances of violations, analyze them, update existing data, and immediately use these insights in their continued work in the project.
  • They will conduct a presentation at a midwifery conference aimed at educating a wider circle of midwives.
  • They will prepare and conduct a detailed full-day training for midwives, the first of its kind in Slovenia. They will form a support group for midwives. They will raise awareness, train, and support midwives so they can implement women’s rights in practice.
  • They will also raise awareness and engage midwifery stakeholders to drive changes in childbirth care.
  • The project aims to reach about 6,000 women of childbearing age and around 100 midwives.
  • Through awareness-raising activities with women and midwives, they cannot fully solve the problem, but reasonably expect that more knowledge, skills, and engagement will lead to a gradual implementation of zero tolerance towards violence during childbirth and contribute to the realization of fundamental EU and human rights for childbirth women.
